Case Study: Preventing Theft and Detecting Insider Threats
The owner of a regional company selling industrial equipment decided to strengthen the business by hiring a friend as the executive director. The candidate was offered a share in the business, in exchange for which he was tasked with organizing the team, expanding the range of clients and partners, and significantly increasing sales.Everything went well while sales were strong, but when a crisis hit, revenues began to decline. An internal conflict between the partners emerged, centered around the questions: “Who is to blame, and what should be done?” The founder decided to expand into neighboring regions, but in order to establish the necessary network of contacts, he had to go on extended business trips. Anticipating that the conflict might escalate behind his back, the owner decided to safeguard the situation by installing SCOPD.
As the SCOPD reports showed, while the owner was away, the executive director worked with the staff, blaming the owner for all the company’s problems: the decline of a once-successful firm, salary delays, and unpaid bonuses. He then proposed that they all leave for his newly established company, taking everything they could from the old one, including client and partner contacts, inventory from the warehouse, and office equipment. The plan was revealed through the “Categories/Deviation” report, which showed a sharp increase in business activity within the company. Employees began going through documents, reviewing old contacts, and rereading emails. The amount of data being transferred to USB drives and cloud services multiplied. There was also a noticeable increase in printing activity and messaging through various platforms. The “Laptop Geolocation” report showed that some employees had quickly taken their machines home. Thanks to SCOPD, the conspiracy was uncovered. The partner was asked to leave amicably, and disloyal staff were dismissed. The company, recovering from the stress, managed to enter a new market, hire talented employees, and implement effective work models.
